BELIEF IS RATIONAL

Let me begin with a confession: I am a technological moron. The truth of the matter is that I had to get a dictionary out just to find out how to spell technological. I am absolutely amazed that we can speak into a cassette recorder and reproduce our voice on a piece of thin tape. I marvel at the fact that I can punch a few buttons on my telephone and be in contact with a friend of mine in Africa. My mind spins out of control when I try to think of the workings of a computer. The fact of the matter is that God is so far greater than any technology that man could ever dream up.

It was God who spoke the very universe into existence. David quite properly said in Psalm 14:1 that "The fool has said in his heart, there is no God". There are many ways in which we can demonstrate the existence of God but one of the simplest is as follows: Design requires a designer.

If you are in a house as you read, look around the room. It has walls that are a certain length and height; it may well have windows that have specific dimensions; I hope it has a door or you will have to escape through the window and if it has no windows or doors, call 911! Within that room will be various pieces of furniture. As I type I have a computer, desk, phone, fax machine, filing cabinets and much more. All of these items have one thing in common, namely, a designer. Not a single thing in my room or yours came into being by chance. No, a man or woman conceived the idea in their mind, put it on paper and then set out to produce it.

If I were to tell you or anyone else that the items in my office just came into being by chance you would think I was crazy and you would have correctly judged. I want you to think of a globe of the world. Here is a small cylinder that has numerous colors and lettering to identify different parts of the world. How in the world could I believe that the globe had to have a creator but the real earth just happened by chance?

Why in the world can intelligent people refuse to believe in God? I don’t pretend to have all of the answers but here are a few:

1. Prejudice – what I mean is that for whatever reason, they refuse to believe in God. They are so prejudiced against Him that they will not see the evidence for God. Prejudice is such a powerful entity. Whether it is race prejudice, political prejudice, economic prejudice or religious prejudice. I am reminded of my dad. He was a ‘straight-ticket’ Republican who would have voted for Osama Bin Laden if he was a Republican and voted against Jesus if He was a Democrat! I don’t understand all of the reasons for prejudice against God but I know it is real.
2. Enlightenment – let me explain. We live in a day and time in which we have discovered so many things. Think of the advancements that have been made in the past 100 years alone. For that matter, think of the advancements in the last 30 years or less. My mother died in 1965 and there is so much in our world today that would cause her to marvel. You see, the Bible says that Jesus fed 5000 people with a small amount of food and afterwards they collected more food than they had at the beginning. The Bible says that He took a blind man and gave him sight, a crippled man and gave him strength. The Bible says that Jesus controlled the weather and even raised the dead. Well, no one (including me) can explain how He did this so it could not have happened since we do not understand.
3. Morality – I am convinced that many who call themselves Atheists are believers who simply do not want to change their lifestyle to bring it into conformity with the will of God. If I am ‘sleeping around’ I know that I will have to give that up to become a Christian. If I like to ‘hit the sauce’ and temporarily lose my mind Christianity is not for me. If I am an impatient and unforgiving person there is no way that I would ever acknowledge God because I would have to surrender my will to Him.

The truth is that blessings abound for the child of God. You see, He is a loving Father whom desires to have fellowship with His creation and who desperately want to forgive us of our sins. He took the initiative by sending His Son to the earth to live and die for each one of us.
